Brunswick, Georgia

The 2012 reunion will be held in the Brunswick, GA area, hosted by the Charles Wynn branch of the family. Details will be forthcoming.

A special thanks to Laquetta and her Helper/Advisors for hosting one of the most well attended Reunions we've had in a long time.

It's never too early to start planning for next year. (I don't mean our hosts... it's a safe bet that they have BEEN planning) I mean US the family members that owe them our full and expedient cooperation in our response and meeting deadlines. Let's all promise to not wait until the last second to R.S.V.P.

I look forward to seeing you... all of you there.      ... L. Maurice Wynn

The Winds of Change

August, 2011 at our Family Meeting at the Reunion in Lake Lanier, GA the Generation X er's of our Family made an even deeper commitment to assume more responsibilities in making sure that our family traditions continue. This was welcome to me. I know that it was especially welcome to those Gen X er's who had already taken up the gauntlet and acted as hosts or assisted in previous years.

We have met for the Wynn Family Reunion at 20 locations in 8 states (that I can recall)! Here they are in alphabetical order, by state. Let me know if I left any out.

Here's a group photo from the 1991 Reunion Hosted by Margaret L. Wynn-Dancy & Family
in Virginia Beach, VA.

As young men Robert B. Wynn and his brothers understood the value of family and unity. They made a pact that all the family members that could, would  meet annually on the 2nd Sunday in August. This became a family tradition that most of my generation was raised with... and one that I cherish and hope that our younger and future generations maintain.

Did you know that...
"Enthusiasm is contagious. You could start an epidemic!"

As I have been working on these pages, and the pages that are not yet available to you, I find myself at times flooded with memories of Aunts, Uncles and Cousins from North Carolina and Tennessee stopping at our house in Atlanta on their way to the Family Reunion sharing a meal, grabbing a quick nap or sometimes sleeping over. Restaurants and motels (even gas stations with restrooms) for Blacks were few and far between in the South. When you traveled you even took your own water if you were smart. We usually left for "Down Home" while it was still dark. It was a looong trip down US 41 to Sylvester. (This was before the new interstate system was completed so the military could move troops and equipment faster and, oh yeah... we citizens get to use it to this very day!)   Most times we were the last to arrive at Uncle DJ's farm. We would have pulled off the road, washed up and changed clothes just before arriving. (Not having money should never be confused with not having pride).

The Old Reunion site as it appears today.

James David (D. J.) Wynn owned this farm near Sylvester, GA where he lived with his Son Elliot and his parents. This was the site of our annual Family Reunion through the 50's.  Though it's changed some and aged considerably it's still standing... just like us.  I doubt that family members more than half a dozen years younger than me will have any recollection of this house... or the good times we had there.
